HDPE Pallet Bins vs Metal Bins

Published 20 June 2026 · 6 min read · Brisbane, QLD

Choosing between HDPE plastic and metal pallet bins comes down to what you store, where you store it, and total cost over the bin’s life. This guide compares the two honestly so you can pick the right one. Nally Bin specialises in food-grade HDPE bins from Brisbane stock.

Hygiene

HDPE is non-porous and smooth, so it doesn’t absorb moisture, oils or odours and washes down easily with hot water and sanitisers. Metal bins can develop rust spots, seams and welds where bacteria and residue collect, which is a problem in food and wet environments. For seafood, produce and food processing, HDPE is the safer choice.

Weight and handling

Plastic bins are significantly lighter than steel, which means less strain on forklifts, less floor wear, and easier manual handling when empty. Lighter bins also mean lower freight cost per unit. The BP 1-2R and BP 2-2R still carry a 5,000 kg static load despite the lighter material.

Cost and lifespan

Metal bins can have a higher upfront price and ongoing costs from rust treatment and repairs. HDPE bins are competitively priced — $390 + GST for our boxes — and resist the corrosion and rot that shorten the life of metal and timber. Over several seasons, the lower maintenance and freight costs add up.

When metal still makes sense

Metal can suit very high-heat applications or specific industrial loads with sharp or extremely heavy contents. But for the large majority of food, agricultural, warehousing and general bulk storage in Australia, food-grade HDPE delivers better hygiene, handling and value.

Frequently asked questions

Are HDPE pallet bins better than metal for food?

Yes. HDPE is non-porous and easy to sanitise, with no rust, seams or welds where bacteria collect, which makes it safer than metal for seafood, produce and food processing.

Do HDPE bins hold as much weight as metal?

Our HDPE pallet boxes are rated to a 5,000 kg static load, which covers the large majority of bulk storage needs, while being much lighter than steel.

Will plastic bins last as long as metal?

HDPE resists rust, rot and UV damage, so it often outlasts metal in wet, coastal and outdoor environments while needing far less maintenance.

Are HDPE bins cheaper than metal?

Our HDPE boxes are $390 + GST and typically cost less to own over time because they avoid rust treatment, repairs and the higher freight cost of heavy steel.
